The challenge of online payments in Latin America
Accepting online payments in Latin America is different from the US or Europe. Each country has its own preferred gateways, regulations, currencies, and popular payment methods. What works in Brazil doesn't work in Venezuela, and what works in Mexico may not be the best option in Colombia.
Payment gateways by country
Mexico
Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking e-commerce market:
- MercadoPago: Most popular. Accepts cards, OXXO, SPEI transfers. Fee: 3.49% + tax
- Stripe: Available since 2021. 3.6% + $3 MXN per transaction
- Conekta: Mexican gateway. Accepts OXXO, SPEI, cards. 2.9% + $2.50 MXN
- PayPal: Consumer trust but higher fees (4.4% + fixed rate)
Key fact: 40% of Mexicans pay online through convenience stores (OXXO), so offering this method is mandatory.
Colombia
- PayU: Market leader. Accepts PSE (bank debit), cash at Baloto/Efecty, cards
- ePayco: Colombian, good integration and competitive fees
- Nequi/Daviplata: Very popular digital wallets, especially among young people
Brazil
- Pix: Revolutionized payments in Brazil. Instant, free, 78% of Brazilians use it. MANDATORY for any Brazilian e-commerce
- Mercado Pago: Dominant in marketplace and e-commerce
- PagSeguro: Popular among small businesses
- Stripe: Available and growing among tech startups
- Boleto bancário: Traditional, still used by those without cards
Argentina
- MercadoPago: Absolute dominant. 60%+ of online transactions go through MercadoPago
- Cryptocurrency: Argentina is top 10 globally in crypto adoption. Heavy USDT usage
Cryptocurrency as a global payment method
Crypto solves a huge problem in Latin America: receiving international payments without traditional bank fees and restrictions.
- USDT (Tether): Dollar-pegged stablecoin. No volatility. Ideal for business
- Binance Pay: 0% fee, easy integration, popular in LATAM
How to choose your payment combination
Golden rule: offer at least 3 payment methods. Each method you don't offer is a percentage of customers you lose.
- Minimum: Credit cards + 1 local method (OXXO in Mexico, Pix in Brazil, etc.)
- Recommended: Cards + local method + PayPal or MercadoPago + crypto
- Maximum: All of the above + bank transfer + buy now pay later
