Why most websites never get traffic from Google
Launching a website doesn't mean Google will send you visitors. Most new sites sit for months at under 100 organic visits a month, and not because SEO "doesn't work," but because they do it backwards: they write about what the business wants to say, not about what people actually search for.
The good news is that organic traffic is still the most profitable channel over the long run. A well-ranked article brings in visitors every day without paying per click. In this guide we walk you through the 90-day plan we use to take small sites from zero to their first few thousand visits, broken into three clear phases.
⚠️ Realistic expectations
Be wary of anyone who promises you the top spot in 30 days. Legitimate SEO compounds: the first results show up between weeks 6 and 12, and they keep growing from there as long as you keep up the pace.
Phase 1 (days 1-30): technical foundations and keyword research
Set up the free tools
Before you write a single line, set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. It's your official source of data: which searches show your site, at what position and how many clicks you get. Without Search Console, you're flying blind.
Check the technical basics
- Make sure all your important pages are indexed (Pages report in Search Console).
- Make sure the site loads fast on mobile (Core Web Vitals in the green, or close).
- One
<h1>per page, with unique titles and meta descriptions. - Short, descriptive URLs with no odd parameters.
- HTTPS enabled and no 404 errors on internal links.
Find keywords you can actually win
The most common mistake is going after broad searches like "shoes" or "digital marketing," which are dominated by giants. A new site wins with long-tail keywords: phrases of 4 or more words with less volume, but far less competition and clearer intent.
| Type | Example | Competition | For a new site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad | inventory software | Very high | Avoid at first |
| Mid-tail | inventory software for small business | High | Month 3 onward |
| Long-tail | how to track inventory for a hardware store in excel | Low | Ideal to start |
Use Google autocomplete, the "People also ask" box and free tools to gather 30 to 50 keywords. Group them by topic: each group becomes one article.
Phase 2 (days 31-60): content that answers better than anyone else
For each keyword, search Google and study the top 5 results. Your goal isn't to copy them, but to write the most helpful answer on page one. In practice, that means:
- Answer the question in the first few paragraphs. No 300-word intros.
- Cover the related questions that show up in competing pages and in "People also ask."
- Add something of your own: a real example, a comparison table, a template, data from your own experience.
- Structure it with H2s and H3s that include natural variations of the keyword.
- Link internally to your service or product pages and between articles on the same topic.
A sustainable pace for a small business is 2 quality articles per week. That's about 16 articles in this phase: enough for Google to start understanding what your site is about.
Phase 3 (days 61-90): optimize what's already working
From day 60 on, Search Console will show you real data. Here's the trick that drives the most traffic for the least effort:
- Pages ranking in positions 8-20: they're one push away from page one. Expand the content, improve the title and add internal links pointing to them.
- Pages with lots of impressions and few clicks: rewrite the title and meta description to make them more compelling. Improving CTR is "free" traffic.
- Searches you didn't expect: if Google shows you for queries you don't cover in depth, create new content for them.
- External links: earn your first backlinks through quality local directories, collaborations and content others want to cite.
💡 The metric that matters
Don't just measure visits. Measure how many of those visitors reach your service or product pages and how many contact you. 1,000 visits with the right intent are worth more than 10,000 curious ones.
