The $30,000 mistake you can avoid
It's a story that plays out over and over: someone has an app idea, spends between $10,000 and $50,000 on development, launches it... and almost nobody uses it. According to CB Insights' analyses of failed startups, the number one reason they fail is building something the market doesn't need.
Validating an idea means gathering real evidence that a problem exists, that people want it solved and that they'd pay for your solution, before you write a single line of code. And you can do it on a budget of $0 to $500 in just a few weeks.
As an agency that builds apps, we'd much rather build a validated product. That's why we're sharing the process we recommend to our own clients.
Step 1: define the problem, not the solution
Write one sentence about who has the problem, what it is and how they solve it today. For example: "Small gym owners lose members because they have no easy way to remind them about their classes; today they do it by hand over WhatsApp."
If you can't describe how the problem gets solved today, it probably isn't that painful. The best ideas replace an existing process that's slow, expensive or frustrating.
Step 2: talk to 15-20 potential customers
Interviews are the cheapest and most underrated validation tool. The key is how you ask:
| ❌ Don't ask | ✅ Ask this instead |
|---|---|
| Would you use an app that does X? | When was the last time you ran into this problem? What did you do? |
| Do you think it's a good idea? | What tools have you tried to solve it? Why did you stop using them? |
| How much would you pay? | How much does this problem cost you today in time or money? |
People are nice and will tell you your idea is great. What matters are past facts, not opinions about the future. If 12 out of 20 people describe the problem in detail and are already spending money or time trying to solve it, you're on the right track.
Step 3: launch a validation landing page
Build a simple page that explains the main benefit, with a call-to-action button: "Join the waitlist" or, even better, "Reserve your spot at 50% off." Tools like Carrd, Framer or a simple Next.js site let you have it ready in a day.
- Traffic: spend $100-300 on targeted ads or share it in communities where your customers hang out.
- Key metric: visitor-to-signup conversion rate. Anything above 10-15% with cold traffic is a strong signal.
- The ultimate signal: pre-sales. If someone pays for something that doesn't exist yet, the demand is real.
Step 4: build a no-code prototype
Before you hire developers, simulate the product. A Figma prototype, an app built with no-code tools like Glide or Bubble, or even a "manual" service behind a form (what's known as a Wizard of Oz MVP) lets you see whether people actually use the solution.
💡 A real-world manual MVP
Many booking apps started out as a Google Form with one person confirming appointments over WhatsApp. When that manual process couldn't keep up anymore, it was time to automate it with an app. That's the best sign the investment is worth it.
Step 5: let the data decide: build or pivot
At the end of 30 days you should have concrete numbers. Use this table as a guide:
| Signal | Weak | Strong |
|---|---|---|
| Interviews that confirm the problem | Fewer than 5 out of 20 | 12 or more out of 20 |
| Landing page conversion | Under 5% | Over 15% |
| Pre-sales or deposits | None | 10 or more |
| Prototype usage | They try it once | They come back without being asked |
Weak signals don't mean giving up: they mean pivoting the audience, the problem or the offer and testing again. Pivoting now is far cheaper than pivoting after you've paid for development.
