Your knowledge is already worth money, but platforms take a cut

If you know how to do something other people want to learn (design, bookkeeping, baking, coding, photography), you can turn it into an online course and sell it again and again. The problem is that many people publish on marketplaces that charge commissions of up to 50%, control the price and won't let you keep your students' data.

Selling from your own website changes the math: you set the price, you keep the margin and you build a customer list you can sell your next course to. In this guide we'll show you how to create and sell your course step by step, without depending on a platform.

Platform vs. your own website: an honest comparison

Factor	Course marketplace	Your own website
Commission per sale	High, sometimes up to 50%	Only the payment processor (3-5%)
Pricing control	Limited, with forced discounts	Total
Student data	Belongs to the platform	Belongs to you
Initial traffic	Some built-in traffic	You generate it yourself
Brand	Lost among thousands of courses	Strengthens your personal brand

The bottom line: a marketplace can be useful for testing, but if you want a sustainable business, your real asset should be your website and your student list.

Step 1: pick a topic with a clear transformation

Courses that sell don't promise to "learn about X"; they promise a specific result: "Design your first professional logo in 7 days," "Do your small business bookkeeping without an accountant." Before you record anything, validate the topic:

Do people often ask you about this?
Are there competing courses that sell? (That's a good sign, not a bad one.)
Can you get 10 people to pay for a pre-sale?

Step 2: design the curriculum backwards

Start with the end result and ask yourself what the student needs to know and do to get there. Every module should bring them closer to that result. A good beginner course usually has 5 to 8 modules with lessons of 5 to 15 minutes: students are more likely to finish short, well-structured courses.

Step 3: record with good-enough quality, not perfect

You don't need a studio. You need good audio (a $50-100 microphone makes all the difference), natural light or a ring light, and a free tool like OBS for screen recording. Clear content beats expensive production.

Step 4: set up your sales website

The minimum setup you need:

A sales page with the promise, curriculum, who you are, testimonials and a guarantee.
A payment processor (Stripe, PayPal, Mercado Pago or crypto payments, depending on your market).
A protected student area where they watch the lessons, ideally with saved progress.
An automated welcome email with access details and a follow-up sequence.

You can build it with WordPress and membership plugins, with all-in-one tools, or with a custom website if you want full control and zero monthly fees.

Step 5: launch with a pre-sale and a waitlist

The launch that works best for a first course:

Weeks 1-2: free content on the topic (posts, reels, lives) that drives people to a waitlist.
Week 3: open the pre-sale to the list only, with a founder's price.
Week 4: close the cart. Real urgency (a price that goes up, limited spots) boosts conversions.

💡 How to price your course

Don't price based on hours of video; price based on the value of the result. If your course helps someone land a $500 client, charging $97 is a bargain for the student.

Mistakes that sink a first course

Recording 20 hours of content before selling a single spot.
Competing on price instead of on results.
Not having an email list: you depend on an algorithm for every sale.
Forgetting about students after they buy: testimonials come from students who finish.
