Why selling online in 2026 is easier than ever

Global e-commerce surpassed $7 trillion in 2026. You no longer need a physical store, large capital, or technical experience to start selling online. With the right tools and a clear strategy, anyone can build a profitable digital business.

In this guide, we teach you step by step everything you need to know to start selling online, from choosing your platform to getting your first customers.

Step 1: Define what you're going to sell

Physical products

Clothing, accessories, electronics, food, crafts. You need to manage inventory, shipping, and returns. The most profitable categories in 2026 are: sustainable fashion, wellness products, wearable tech, and personalized products.

Digital products

Online courses, ebooks, templates, software, music, digital art. No inventory or shipping. 70-95% profit margin. The most scalable model because once the product is created, you can sell it infinitely at no additional cost.

Services

Consulting, design, programming, marketing, coaching. No inventory needed but requires time. The key is productizing your service: offering packages with fixed prices instead of charging by the hour.

Step 2: Choose your selling platform

Your own website (recommended)

The most professional and profitable option long-term. With platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, or a custom solution with Next.js, you have total control over the customer experience, data, and commissions. At AvilaDev, we build professional online stores starting at $500 with all necessary integrations.

Marketplaces

Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Walmart. Advantage: immediate traffic. Disadvantage: high commissions (10-20%) and direct competition. Ideal for starting and validating your product.

Social media

Instagram Shopping, Facebook Marketplace, TikTok Shop. Perfect for visual products and personal brands. An ideal complement to your own website.

Step 3: Set up payment methods

The more payment options you offer, the more sales you'll close. Essential methods by region:

Global: Credit/debit cards (Stripe, Square), PayPal
USA/Europe: Apple Pay, Google Pay, buy now pay later (Klarna, Afterpay)
Latin America: MercadoPago, bank transfers, crypto (USDT)
Brazil: Pix (mandatory), boleto, PagSeguro

Step 4: Create your digital marketing strategy

SEO (Google ranking)

The most profitable traffic source long-term. Optimize product descriptions, create a blog with relevant content, and work on technical SEO. Results take 3-6 months but are cumulative.

Social media

Post consistent content on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Reels and short videos generate 3x more engagement than static photos. Show your product in use, tell stories, share customer testimonials.

Paid advertising

Google Ads and Meta Ads are the main platforms. Start with $5-$10/day and optimize based on results. For e-commerce, Google Shopping ads and Facebook catalogs are especially effective.

Email marketing

Build an email list from day one. Offer a subscription discount. Email marketing has an average ROI of $42 for every $1 spent. Use free tools like Mailchimp or Brevo to get started.

Step 5: Manage logistics

Self-shipping: Total control but requires time and logistics
Dropshipping: Supplier ships directly to customer. No inventory but lower margins
Fulfillment: Services like Amazon FBA handle storage and shipping
Store pickup: If you have a physical location, offer this to save on shipping

Common mistakes when selling online

Not investing in photography: Photos are your silent salesperson. Invest in good images
Ignoring mobile: 70%+ of online purchases are made from phones
Complicating checkout: Each extra step in the payment process loses 10% of customers
No clear policies: Shipping, returns, and warranty must be transparent
Giving up too soon: The first 3-6 months are for learning and adjusting

Start today

Don't wait until everything is perfect to start. Launch with the minimum viable product, learn from your first customers, and constantly improve. The best time to start selling online was yesterday. The second best time is today.
