The great debate: Your own store or marketplace?

If you want to sell online in 2026, you have two main paths: create your own online store (e-commerce) or sell on a marketplace like Amazon, Etsy, or Walmart. Each option has clear advantages and disadvantages.

Marketplace: pros and cons

Pros

Immediate traffic: Millions of buyers already searching for what you sell
Buyer trust: Customers trust Amazon to protect their purchase
Solved logistics: Programs like FBA handle shipping
No technical investment: No website, hosting, or development needed

Cons

High commissions: 8-36% of every sale goes to the platform
No brand control: Your store looks like everyone else's
Direct competition: Your product appears next to 50 competitors
No customer data: You don't get emails or data for future marketing
Dependency: If the platform changes rules or closes your account, you lose everything

Your own e-commerce: pros and cons

Pros

Full brand control: Design, experience, communication — all yours
Higher margins: Only pay 2-4% payment gateway fees, not 15-36%
Customer data: Email, phone, purchase history — all for your marketing
No direct competition: On your site, only you sell
Own SEO: Your site ranks on Google and generates free organic traffic

Cons

Generating traffic: You need to invest in SEO, ads, or social media
Initial investment: Development, hosting, domain, design — requires capital
Own logistics: You handle shipping (though you can outsource)

The hybrid strategy (recommended)

Phase 1 (Months 1-3): Launch on marketplace to validate demand
Phase 2 (Months 3-6): Create your own store while continuing marketplace sales
Phase 3 (Months 6+): Redirect repeat customers to your own store
Phase 4: Gradually reduce marketplace dependency as organic traffic grows
